Mandatory Digital GRU: How to Adapt Workflows and Mitigate Operational Risks

As of April 6, the use of the new digital platform for the Federal Payment Slip (GRU Digital) has become mandatory, replacing the previous boleto-based model.

What changes in practice?
The new system introduces significant changes to operational routines:

  • Issuance of payment slips exclusively through digital platforms (National Treasury Portal or PJe);
  • Automatic validation of data (taxpayer ID – CPF/CNPJ – and revenue codes);
  • Immediate payment confirmation; and
  • Availability of payment via Pix and credit card.

What are the impacts?
While the measure is expected to increase efficiency and reduce errors, it requires adjustments to internal workflows, particularly between legal and finance teams.

We highlight the following key considerations:

  • The previous model (Standard or Judicial) can no longer be used;
  • Accurate data entry is required for issuance of the payment slip;
  • Dependence on the digital platform to process payments; and
  • Risk of missed deadlines in the event of operational failures.

Recommendations
We recommend, at this stage:

  • Reviewing internal procedures for the payment of court fees;
  • Training the teams involved;
  • Ensuring alignment between legal and finance departments; and
  • Prioritizing payment via Pix, given its immediate confirmation.
